“Taking a soap making hobby and turning it into a legal business can be a very expensive journey before you make a single penny.
Any product that ’touches the skin’ must pass rigorous testing and assessment tests which are onerous and expensive. You can rest assured that every ‘All in the Buff’ Soap products carry the Safe Soap logo to show we FULLY comply with all such assessments and we carry an official Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR) that ensures safe use, and enables lawful sales of our products… So, before you buy any soap or cosmetic product from an artisan manufacturer – protect yourself by ensuring they are compliant with their testing and assessment obligations…
Inevitably, these trying times direct people to look at different ways to earn money. Soap Making might on the surface appear to be an easy target – but there are some significant legal obligations that must be adhered to. In your free time you love to craft, and you have a hobby. You make soap and cosmetic products for yourself/family/friends. You thought you would hand make some lovely soap and skincare products for friends or family for Birthday/Christmas presents. They absolutely love them. They want to buy more from you or tell you how great it is and that you should sell it. You think ‘Okay, great – I can make my hobby a business’ and ‘I can get a market stall or sell it online’.
If only it was that simple!
Regulations state: If you intend to make and sell products you are considered the responsible person for all the obligations set out in the Regulations. It is your responsibility to ensure you are complying with the regulations and carrying out all necessary independent testing and assessments, record keeping and safety precautions, and correctly labelling all products.
Cosmetic legislation ensures that ALL cosmetic products that are on the market in the UK are safe and fit for purpose. It is regulated legislation. Cosmetics’ include soaps; shower gels; shampoos; skin toners; moisturisers and cleansers; to mention a selection. The Cosmetic Regulation controls what may or may not be put into a product. The primary purpose of these laws is to protect human safety. It is important that your future customer has confidence in the safety of your products.”
All our products are made from natural ingredients including our accessory range which features Hemp, Bamboo and 100% Cotton, and as such are Vegan Friendly apart from the Donkey’s Milk, Goat’s Milk and Honey (as these are animal by-products).
When making the accessories in my collection I only use eco-friendly and sustainable fabrics and materials, such as Hemp, Organic Cottons and Bamboo to name three. These materials are not only kind to the environment but, being hard wearing and machine washable; they last so much longer too.
The term ‘eco-friendly’ refers to fabrics and textiles that have a reduced carbon, energy and pollution impact, when compared to other, more standard materials and methods of production said fabrics, textiles (and manufactured clothing).
Generally speaking, eco-friendly fabrics are produced from crops that do not require pesticides or chemicals to be grown, use less water and energy to be converted and processed, and furthermore create less waste during the whole process and at the end of their useful lives (known collectively as their ‘environmental footprint’).
‘Sustainable’ fabrics can also refer to man made fabrics produced from renewable sources such as wood. There is a myriad of eco-friendly fabrics whose benefits go beyond their positive social and environmental footprint.
The Hemp is sourced from a co-operative that combines the crops of small groups of farmers. These farmers produce their hemp crops as naturally as possible with best intentions for the environment.
The fabrics we use are made using traditional fabric weaving and finishing techniques. European hemp is different to hemp from India, China and Nepal as it has less processing and the fibres the fabric is made from are longer, which makes European fabrics stronger and longer lasting.
The hemp fabrics can be safely washed at 30 degrees.
Although some still confuse hemp with its well-known cousin, marijuana, this ancient plant is enjoying popularity as an Eco-alternative to conventional fabrics. Growing hemp is kinder to the planet, it is resilient, adaptable and requires little water.
Hemp fibre has some unique and interesting characteristics, which makes it a suitable replacement for conventional fabrics. It has impressive tensile strength and has a great resistance to bacteria and mould.
Bamboo yarn and fabric is silky soft, making it an excellent choice for next-to-skin applications. Bamboo ‘wicks’ moisture away from the skin, allowing it to evaporate. Independent laboratory tests have shown that it retains its natural antibacterial properties during the life cycle of the product (i.e. after many, many wash cycles). It also has superior absorption capacities, is breathable and cool.
The bamboo plant grows extremely quickly. As with hemp, it grows like a weed without the need for pesticides or fertilizers, making it an organic crop by its very nature. The fibre and yarn spun from bamboo is fully biodegradable. All parts of the plant can be used, so there is no waste. As with hemp, bamboo is also a sustainable and quickly renewable crop and an excellent alternative to conventional fabrics, that places large demands on the soil and relies heavily on irrigation.
Our bamboo fabrics can be washed up to 60°C, although we recommend washing them at 40°C as lower washing temperatures are lighter on the environment and your fabric.
